Saint Louie County is home to the Indian River Lagoon, a 5,000 acre estuary, and mosquitoes breed in these wetlands. To control the mosquito population and prevent the spread of mosquito related diseases, the County adopted the Rotational Impoundment Management (RIM) strategy. RIM reconnects pounds and streams to the Indian River Lagoon and floods the lagoon during the mosquito breeding season which prevents mosquitoes from laying eggs.
