On the evening of February 27, 2008, the town of Reading, Massachusetts (population 23,708), held its first World Café conversation. The event, open to anyone who lived or worked in Reading, attracted approximately 220 participants, including high school students; senior citizens; businesspeople; representatives from cultural, religious, and other nonprofit institutions; volunteers; activists; and residents who had never been involved in local activities before.
