To a community that prides itself on being inclusive, Peoria, Arizona’s partnership with Special Olympics Arizona is a source of great pride. Since its beginning in 1986, the City of Peoria’s Community Services Department’s Adaptive Recreation Program has collaborated with Special Olympics to provide recreational opportunities to individuals with disabilities. Starting in 2003 Special Olympics has implemented a five-year master plan to develop new programs and competition opportunities, while evaluating the quality of its services. Studies showed that the West Valley area was not being served effectively. Demographic changes in the cities of Peoria, Avondale, Goodyear, Surprise, Buckeye and others necessitated the establishment of an agency to oversee athlete recruitment, program development or to provide area competitions for local program. This was the first expansion since the development of the East Valley Area in 1989.
