This report and Pedestrian Safety Action Plan examines eight years of data on traffic accidents that have resulted in serious pedestrian injury or death.  While accident-related fatalities in New York City are down by 35 percent compared to 2001, and while these numbers are among the lowest in the US and internationally, the city's Department of Transportation has decided to address safety concerns in order to reduce this rate by 50 percent by 2030.  This report and action plan examines the trends in accidents and factors causing them and proposes actions, including installing count down traffic lights and re-engineering intersections, to further improve pedestrian safety.
