A group of residents, artists, design professionals, and Arlington County, Virginia (189,000), staff members met to contribute their ideas for an urban walkway in their community. During the meeting, participants worked in small groups to address such issues as safety and security, public art and street furniture, wayfinding (maps and signs), and links to other trails. Participants also identified their favorite and least favorite spots for walking. Based on the input from the meeting, as well as other research, the county decided to hire an urban designer to study ways to enhance the appeal and safety of walking in the county. The designer completed a report in 2003 and presented it to 40 members of the community. The report addresses design, engineering, and programming recommendations. The county has now authorized an interdepartmental team to study the recommendations and ways to fund their implementation.
