Energy costs are soaring and municipal budgets are being squeezed. The LEED building certification program combines energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. LEED stands for "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design," and was devised by the Green Building Council in 2000 as a way of encouraging more sustainable approaches to building design after two decades of sprawl and increased building sizes and relatively low petroleum costs had markedly increased national demand for energy.
