With the enacting of the Mayo County Walking Strategy in 2007 came the idea that Mayo County, Ireland could become the adventure and walking capital of Ireland.  More and more of Ireland's population is commuting short distances to work and engaging in less physical activity.  To inspire more walking, the federal government of Ireland has set in place goals for safe offroad walking and cycling infrastructure.

The Great Western Greenway is Mayo County's answer to the goals.  The project has the advantage of feeding the natural demand of the area's tourism for hiking and walking areas while simultaneously providing residents with a safer and healthier commute.

In order to make the project work, the county partnered with 161 landowners with land along the projected trails.  The landowners were partners in the development of the Greenway as well as member of its construction and management.

This case study was nominated for ICMA's Annual Awards Program.
