The 2008 C Peter Magarth Engagement Award application for the partnership between Arizona State University and the City of Phoenix that resulted in the establishment of the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus in 2006. With votes approving a $223 million bond commitment, the City of Phoenix acquired 18 acres of land in the downtown and ASU Colleges of Public Programs, Nursing and Healthcare Innovation, and University College were housed in renovated spaces. The Downtown Phoenix campus initially supported more than 2500 undergraduate and masters, and PhD students and provided on campus housing for 250. The Deputy City Manager met with city and university officials to review the progress of the ASU campus. The document also describes the symbiotic relationship between the city and the university wherein public and private investment in the downtown area increased and university programs enabled students to partner with local organizations to gain hands on experience and improve social services for the neighboring low income community.
