Residents of Pottawattamie County, Iowa (88,000), recently had the opportunity to use a survey to communicate their opinions on several county land issues to the county planning and zoning commission and the county board of supervisors. The survey was available at county offices, city clerks’ offices in smaller communities, and on the county’s Web site. Survey participants indicated their opinions on a range of land use issues, including housing developments, road improvements, and public facilities and services in rural areas. The county advertised the availability of the survey in newspapers and on its Web site. The survey was developed and tallied by a consulting firm as part of its agreement with the county to help rewrite the county’s land use plan. As a result, the main cost of the survey was a few hundred dollars for advertising and mailing. The survey results will inform the county’s current rewriting of its land use plan.
