The City of Surrey signed British Columbia's Climate Action Charter, requiring local governments and their communities to become more environmentally-friendly. Surrey has risen to this challenge by implementing the Corporate Emissions Action Plan, which examines first the government's contributions to greenhouse gas emissions. Through a change-over to energy efficient buildings and powering as much as possible through alternative energy sources, the city has already achieved a 6.5% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions over the course of one year.
