America needs a sustainability civics lesson. At least that's what Joel Mills, director of the American Institute of Architects Center for Communities by Design, argues in this 2010 National Civic Review piece. Mills believes that public belief in the concept of sustainability has waned in recent years, even as the consequences for future generations has become more clear. All is not lost however, as Mills celebrates the role that local governments are playing in developing and implementing innovative sustainability policies within their communities. This piece serves as introduction to an entire edition dedicated to highlighting examples of those policies in action.
