This March 2010 press release details the propsed fiscal year 2011 budget for the City of Falls Church, Virginia. Forced to make a series of tough budget cuts in the wake of the 2008 global recession, the city communications team decided to be upfront with residents and publicize the bad as well as the good. Decisions like salary freezes, staff downsizing, cancelling city-wide celebrations of holidays like the Fourth of July and increased program and building permit fees are all grimly laid out for residents to read and digest, along with calls for shared sacrifices across the board. The kind of tough cuts implemented by Falls Church reflect the challenge that is still facing most local governments a little more than two years after the recession drained most of the state and federal funding that they rely on to fill revenue shortfalls.
