To reduce companion animal overpopulation, Prince George’s County, Maryland (801,515), participates in Prevent a Litter Month each year. This year, 16 veterinarians are offering a 25 percent discount on spay/neuter surgeries, and pet owners who take advantage of this offer will receive a free 2002 pet license from the county’s animal management division. The program is publicized through a press release, flyers sent to supermarkets and public libraries, and by animal management officers. The costs incurred by the program are those associated with printing and mailing the flyer, as well as the labor involved in managing the campaign.
