To expand broadband internet access to communities lacking this capability, cities and counties can apply to receive Broadband Stimulus Package grants. These funds are issued by the Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service (RUS) and the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA); these agencies have written guidelines for program eligibility. Municipalities are required to submit program applications between July 14 and August 14, all money must be distributed by September 30, 2010, and also projects must be completed three years after receiving the stimulus money.
