The Bike Library is a city-wide bike-lending program. The program was created in response to two needs: the desire for residents to use the abundant bike trails of Fort Collins when they might not have a bike handy, and the desires of the city to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2025.
A similar program was already operating on a small scale on the Colorado State University campus, giving a precedent for the city to work from. The program was initiated after the city received funding from a state air quality grant, and careful spending allowed the same grant to continue funding the program from 2009 until 2012. Since opening, the Bike Library has helped 11,436 patrons ride 147,200 miles, saving an estimated 67.2 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
