Diesel Particulate Matter (Diesel PM) is a complex mixture of pollutants emitted during the combustion of diesel fuels. The pollutant is listed by the State of California as a known carcinogen. A number of studies have shown higher incidence of asthma at residential or school sites with high outdoor concentrations of fine particles. The purpose of this study is to quantify the diesel emissions sources within Bayview Hunters Point (BHP), determine the health impacts on local residents, and recommend actions to reduce these negative health impacts.
