Implementing GIS is more than just purchasing hardware, software, and data; it requires education, planning, communication, and hard work. To avoid pitfalls, communities should not only have a clear picture of what they have and what they need, but also know what problems can be solved by GIS, what it will cost for implementation, and how to proceed. This session focused on how small communities just getting started with GIS can perform a GIS assessment.
