WELCOME TO ICMA'S NEW BLOG ABOUT THE NEXT GENERATION OF THE PROFESSION!

This space is intended to help promote ICMA's Next Generation Initiatives with ICMA membership, and to the wider world of prodessional local government management and friends. Less formal than our news feed at icma.org/careers, we'll be posting interesting links, good reads, maybe some data, stuff from our friends, and other musings as the mood takes us. If you'd like to be a contributing blogger, just send an email to nextgen@icma.org.

To get started, we'll send our congratulations to Catherine (Durham) Renbarger, an Alumnus of the Local Government Management Fellowship, on her new position as the City Manager of Claremont, North Carolina!

Other things we might share are things like, "How to Tap Military Experience for Executive Jobs" - an article from Governing with advice on how to value military experience during your application (from resume to interview). But the lessons on communicating transferrable skills are good for anyone from a career changer, an industry changer or a position changer.

Or this article from The Atlantic, on "The Thing Employers Look For When Hiring Recent Graduates." Spoiler alert - it's basically just make sure you have some kind of job or internship while you're in school. And ideally one that has some focus toward where you think you're headed when you're 22. College reputation was last on the list, just below your GPA.

Speaking of that, another interesting and quick read is from Governing on, "If I Were 22."

A personal favorite from Daniel Pink on the crushing worry we have when we think about "our passion" - warning, this is a video: How Dan Pink Learned the Six Lessons. In just over six minutes.
