It is said that one cannot forget how to ride a bike, but one can easily forget about some of the great bicycling-related resources on the Knowledge Network. Whether you are fielding calls from constituents for new roads, or your council has been considering options for new sustainability efforts in the community, it is important for you to know about the bicycling initiatives that your fellow managers have engaged in. To keep you in the know on cycling culture, I have compiled a list of some of the most interesting cycling-related resources on the Knowledge Network.
- One Professional Fellow looks at the DC Bike Share program, which provides thousands of bikes for my fellow DC-area bike commuters.
- Gordon Bower looks at how Punta Gorda, Florida, uses cycling is a “management tool”.
- In a thoughtful response to a PM article, Ralph Buehler offers some research results and contextual factors so that city and county managers can have the best available information when they examine the viability of cycling in their communities.
- So as not to “re-build” the wheel, check out the bicycle and pedestrian master planning documents used by Clearwater, Florida.
- Cities looking to increase bicycle infrastructure would do well to check out Roseville, California’s “Bicycle Parking & Rack Guide”.
- The League of American Bicyclists offers a great document that outlines steps you can take to make your municipality more bike-friendly.
- Learn about how Roanoke, Virginia recently became a League of American Bicyclists Bicycle Friendly Community award winner.
In these and other resources on the Knowledge Network, you can learn everything that you will ever need to know about creating the perfect cycling infrastructure for your community. If you have any questions about these resources, feel free to reach out to me or the community at the cycling topic page.
Be sure to share the details of some of your local cycling initiatives below this post.
