The concept of life and work balance is tricky.  At ICMA, we understand there isn’t a perfect equation to get it right.  Life isn’t all about work, but your work isn’t completely separate from your personal life.  Finding the time to develop your personal skills is key to the success of your professional career.  So, how do you do it?  Where do you pencil in the time?

For starters, if you’re going to our 99th Annual Conference this weekend in Boston, Massachusetts (September 22-25, 2013), you can join us for these great resource sessions.

Got Guilt?

Tuesday, September 24, 2:00 - 3:10 p.m.

We’re told to just ignore it, but yet we don’t: concern with work left unfinished weighs on our minds.  Learn how to dial back your guilt quotient so you can be happier and more successful--both at work and at home.  Addresses Practice Group 18.

Forging Onward after Failure

Tuesday, September 24, 3:30 - 4:40 p.m.

Spanish philosopher Georges Santayana warned that “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”  If you believe this to be true, attend this session where senior professionals describe their biggest flops, what they learned from their failures, and how they dusted themselves off and forged ahead all the wiser.  Addresses Practice Group 6, 18.

If we won’t be seeing you in Boston, you can check out some of our other resources that we’ll be talking about at our conference sessions:

“You Complete Me: Personal Skills to Make You a Better Professional.”

Can’t make it out to conference but still interested in connecting with ICMA personally?  ICMA brings University Workshops to you with high quality professional development training.  Personal development happens to be one of our focus areas for training.  Check out the rest of our skill development focus areas.

Looking to develop what it is that makes you, you?  Check out this ICMA article, “Career Compass No. 23: Building Your Personal Brand.”  Learn how to market yourself best for the job you are looking for and discover the professional and personal skills that make you a marketable candidate for any local government job.
