I am writing this blog as I near the end of my teaching assignment at the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) in Beijing, China. I came here almost 2 weeks ago not knowing what to expect from this experience. I hoped it would be fun; I knew it would be interesting; but mostly, I was just looking for "different." I wanted to try something new in a new place and this guest lecturer assignment through the ICMA China Center offered that opportunity.

I have been teaching a class on local government operations in the U.S. to about 10 students from different universities around China. To say that this has been life altering would be an understatement. I have found this experience to be rewarding and enriching beyond words. To connect with students from a different culture and help them learn about concepts that were previously unimaginable to them is incredible. But in return, they have taught me so much about their country, how it runs and what makes it special to each of them.

Nichols class

This class has truly been a sharing and exchange of knowledge and information on both sides. And to see their true passion for education and learning is admirable. They genuinely appreciate the opportunity to attend class and hear from someone with a new perspective to offer. How else do you explain skipping your summer vacation so you can take optional classes at school with some of the students traveling 2 hours each way to get to class every day? That is dedication!

I am grateful to the China Center, CUPL and ICMA for this opportunity I've been afforded. I've had an experience of a lifetime here and am hopeful I'll have other chances to teach overseas.
