How frequently are local governments the victims of cyberattacks, incidents, and breaches? How are they protecting themselves? And what do they say they need most to ensure high levels of cybersecurity?

To answer questions like these, ICMA has just launched a survey to gather data on local government cybersecurity practices, policies, and problems.

The survey is addressed to the chief information officer (CIO) in each jurisdiction, and we urge ICMA members and other chief administrators to alert their CIOs to the survey and encourage them to complete it. Aggregate data will be published, but the responses of individual jurisdictions will be kept confidential.

ICMA is conducting the survey in partnership with the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Among the topics included are:

  • Cybersecurity staffing
  • Types of cyberattacks reported
  • Policies, practices, and tools local governments employ to improve cybersecurity
  • Barriers to improvement.

ICMA has begun to assemble cybersecurity resources and will use the survey results to help expand our offerings. Examples:
