National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) 2016 kicked off on October 1. Throughout the month, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), along with the National Cyber Security Alliance, is calling on Americans to take basic steps to secure their online lives and raise awareness for cybersecurity.
Each week, DHS is providing information and advice to help individuals and organizations stay cyber-secure. The message for Week 1 was addressed to individuals; Week 2 provides common-sense reminders about cybersecurity for organizations:

A cyberattack can have devastating effects on an organization. It can result in a significant financial loss, threaten an organization’s reputation, and affect its ability to operate.

In today’s digital world, protecting against such cyberattacks is no longer solely the responsibility of the Information Technology (IT) Department. All employees—from entry-level employees to the chief administrator—have an important role to play in protecting their organization from cyber threats.

Here is how you can keep your organization safe and secure online during National Cyber Security Awareness Month and year round:

  • Beware of phishing emails. Do not open emails, links, or attachments from strangers. Phishing attacks use email or malicious websites to infect your machine with malware in order to collect personal and financial information.
  • Make your passwords complex. Use a combination of numbers, symbols, and letters (uppercase and lowercase). Change your passwords regularly, especially if you believe your password has been compromised.
  • Report all suspicious activity. If you notice that something seems off or unusual with your computer, report it immediately to the IT department.

The Federal Trade Commission’s “Start with Security” guide was developed for the private sector but provides advice and guidelines that are equally relevant for local governments.

The theme for Week 3 will be “Recognizing and Combating Cybercrime.”
