An ICMA member posed a recent question on the Knowledge Network on how to pursue a career as a city manager. The responses from a range of local government professionals offered valuable advice and discussion on the merits of practical experience, graduate education, and using personal accounts to increase marketability.

Here are some of their thoughts:

  • While public sector experience with city administration is valuable, be flexible and consider non-government organizations, as they also provide leadership and management experience.
  • Possible routes to explore include interning with the office of the City Manger, or working in entry- to mid-level positions in municipal organizations.
  • Be willing to put in the time and work up the ladder. Experience working in local government is as important as the graduate degree.
  • City Managers typically have ten years of municipal experience while an Assistant may be a fresh MPA gradate with at least five years of municipal experience.
  • A Masters level degree is imperative for city managers. A Masters in Public Administration is usually a standard requirement for City Manger positions, but a Masters in Business Administration can also be considered as an alternative to MPA. When interviewing, always demonstrate how your degree and experience gives you an advantage in fiscal management, marketing, branding, and other essential management skills.
