As I was preparing to celebrate Boss’s Day on October 16, I began to think about all the different workplace dynamics that make up the culture of local government management. While my job is unlike many other local government-related jobs, I imagine that I have at least one thing in common with all other local government employees: a desire to do my job as efficiently as possible so as to lessen the burden of work on my boss and the other people who depend on me.
In an effort to ensure that the members of the next generation of managers can do as much as possible to minimize the burden of work for their colleagues, I have compiled a list of resources that offer great insights into working with others.
- “You're Naked and Who Is Going to Tell You?” lays out a plan for making the best decisions through the consultation of those around you.
- “What To Do When the Ethical Dilemma Involves Your Elected Official” offers insights on responding to ethical concerns that arise in your governing board.
- “Challenges in the New Era” outlines some important parameters to set when engaging in a publicly funded project.
- “Promoting Civility at Public Meetings: Concepts” presents background and strategies for promoting a culture of civility in public meetings.
- “Free Golf for City Officials?” provides a practical outline for handling gifts that could be perceived as exerting an undue influence on government officials.
- “Practical Advice for the Political Season” discusses how to adhere to the ICMA Code of Ethics during election season in your locality.
- “How to Create a Great Coaching Relationship” describes the benefits of implementing a coaching-style relationship into your life.

If you have lessons that you would like to impart on the budding members of the government management community, feel free to share them as comments below this post.
