While there is Veterans Day in the fall and Veteran Appreciation Month in the spring it is important to make sure that they stay in our minds all year round so we can implement the programs they need to be successful in the community. Celebrations are great but meaningful programs and resources will help more so look through these examples and hopefully you will be inspired to create the next great veteran appreciation program today!
- Returning Home from Iraq and Afghanistan: Assessments of Readjustment Needs of Veterans, Service Members, and Their Families is comprehensive document that covers everything military members and their families need to thrive in their communities.
- Intergenerational Connections is a program that helps those in different generations connect in the community and can be a great program for both young and older veterans to participate so they can share their experiences with community members.
- The Role of Local Government in Veterans and Military Family Issues is an article from PM Magazine that discusses what local governments can do for veterans and military families given the recent fiscal constraints that many local governments are operating under.
- Local Governments Caring for Returning Veterans and Their Families: An ICMA Fact Sheet is a quick fact sheet that looks at the veterans who are currently returning to the community and what major issues local governments need to understand.
- Communities Caring for Their Veterans is a recent article that discusses different successful local government programs that have had very positive impacts on veterans and military families.
- Helping Veterans 365 Days a Year is a blog post that highlights transformative community programming for veterans and military families.
If your community is already helping veterans then please upload a document or write about it in a blog post so other communities can learn how to celebrate their veterans and provide them with the support they need all year round.
