By 2020, it is estimated that millennials will form 50 percent of the workforce and that 84 percent of millennials seek purposeful work. This means that now is the time for developing the best modern approaches for appealing to millennials. Here are three tips to help your local government be successful in hiring and retaining millennials.

  1. To effectively compete against the nonprofit sector, outbound marketing is crucial.
  2. The hiring process must be more engaged and transparent, including meetings with the city manager.
  3. Key to keeping a millennial employee is having a flexible organizational culture that is filled with opportunities and merit-based progression, rather than on focusing advancement on seniority.

These tips are important for not just acquiring millennial workers, but also for maintaining a high-performing organization.
