Open classes in Kakheti public schools

During January 26 - March 17, 2015 WMTR team continued holding open classes on Integrated Waste Management in public schools across Kakheti region of Georgia. Open classes covered the Basics of Integrated Waste Management at the following public schools:

  • Public school # 1 of Kvareli and public schools of villages of Shilda, Eniseli and Akhalsopeliin;
  • Public schools # 1 and # 2 of Akhmeta and public schools # 1 and # 2 of Matani village; public schools of villages of Duisi, Jokolo and KvemoAlvani; and public school #1 of Zemo Alvani;
  • Public schools of villages of Ninotsminda, Patardzeuli, and Ujarma of Sagarejo municipality;
  • Public school # 2 of Telavi and public schools of villages of Artani, Napareuli, Gulguli and Kisiskhevi.

The team talked to the students about modern approaches to waste management, US and European experiences in waste management, and challenges that Georgia faces in this area. The students also got acquainted with the 4Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle) approach which is essential for the promotion of sustainable waste management principles.

During open classes, the students were notably active and showed interest in the issues of landfills, waste-recycling plants, and fines for pollution. The training participants acknowledged the importance of raising public awareness on environmental issues and the introduction of fines for environmental pollution as essential for the introduction of integrated waste management.

Overall, 450 students of grades 9-12 attended WMTR open classes. They were organized in the framework of the USAID funded program Waste Management Technologies in Regions (WMTR). The program is implemented through CityLinks by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) and its local partner, CENN.
