A ribbon cutting ceremony was held in early June for the new Jameson Energy Center which had been under construction since October 10, 2013. 

The Jameson Energy Center is a joint project between the Kansas Municipal Energy Agency (KMEA) and the City of Garden City, which includes three combustion turbine generators that will be part of the City’s power supply plan. Elected officials, representatives and employees of the City of Garden City, KMEA, Sega Inc., Siemens Energy, the Chamber of Commerce and neighboring municipalities were in attendance. KMEA and Siemens sponsored the event, which also included a tour of the facility.

At the October 10, 2013 Groundbreaking Ceremony, Public Utilities Director, Mike Muirhead said, “The Jameson Energy Center, as a part of the entire Garden City power supply plan, will assist the City in being able to control, or at least stabilize, current and future energy costs for its customers.”

Garden City’s Public Utilities Department has been working to provide power needed to meet residential, commercial and industrial needs since 1916. Muirhead reports that the electric system provides service to approximately 12,000 electric meters throughout Garden City.

KMEA awarded Siemens the contract to supply the three SGT-400 gas turbines and generators. The installation and construction of the project was managed by engineering company, Sega, Inc. The new turbines will be used for peaking resources during normal operations and can be used in emergency situations, should the power go out during severe weather events, such as an ice storm.

Bob Poehling, general manager of KMEA and Greg DuMars president of KMEA was on hand for the ceremony. “This is a major milestone for the City in its quest to achieve total energy independence,” Poehling said at the groundbreaking.
