The City of Gainesville along with its funding partners, the Florida Department Of Transportation (FDOT), the University of Florida, and Alachua County, have made twelve cameras along Interstate-75 available to the public to view traffic. The twelve cameras include three in the Paynes Prairie area; several others at major area interchange exits including Williston Road, Archer Road, Newberry Road, NW 39th Avenue, and US Highway 441 in the City of Alachua, as well as bridge crossings at SW 20th Avenue, NW 23rd Avenue and Millhopper Road.

Since December of 2011, the City of Gainesville has been working with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to expand its award-winning Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) onto the interstate. The twelve cameras were designed as an interim project before a full deployment of the ITS could be funded for I-75 in Alachua County.

Ten of the twelve cameras rely on solar power and wireless communications to stream video back to the City’s Traffic Management Center. In late October 2012, the Florida Department of Transportation announced that Alachua County would receive funding to support full deployment of the ITS.

The public can view the cameras from the Gainesville/Alachua County Smartraffic website located at http://gac-smartraffic.com. GAC Smartraffic is operated by the City of Gainesville and also funded in partnership with Alachua County, the University of Florida, and the Florida Department of Transportation. Citizens will be able to view snapshots from the cameras updated once every minute. The same images will also be available soon on the Florida Department of Transportation 511 traffic information page located at http://fl511.com.
