With just days remaining before the current transportation authorization expires, Congress acted to pass a three-month extension of the nation’s gas tax and transportation programs. The short-term extension comes on the passage of a two-year transportation bill by the Senate earlier this month, which was rejected by the House in a procedural vote.

The House and Senate remain far apart on a vision for a long-term transportation plan. The Senate intends to press forward with its two-year extension, while the House is likely to use the next three months to continue to develop its proposed five-year plan, which has yet to garner enough support to pass.

The bill now goes to President Obama, who is expected to sign it into law within the next few days.
