On November 19, 2014, the City of North Port and Sarasota County offered a variety of activities on GIS Day. GIS stands for “geographic information system” and is about visualizing, questioning, analyzing, interpreting, and understanding data to reveal relationships, patterns, and trends.

GIS Day is an annual activity that is part of Geography Awareness Week, sponsored by National Geographic. GIS Day, which is recognized throughout the world and organized by ESRI, was first celebrated in 1999. The goal is to offer a time for people to learn about geography and uses of GIS.

On November 6, 2014, the North Port City Commission presented a proclamation recognizing GIS Day during a special meeting at 4 p.m. inside the Commission Chambers at City Hall, 4970 City Hall Blvd.

Residents visiting City Hall on November 19 saw an information table on the first floor where they can find information about GIS technology and view display boards that describe what GIS technology is and how it is used by City staff.

At the North Port Library on Nov. 19, Sarasota County and the City of North Port displayed a map gallery. Residents who visit the Library could view large maps that showcase City and County services, programs, and projects using GIS technology. A Sarasota County GIS staff member wasbe there to answer questions.

In addition, North Port High School students got a chance to learn more about GIS technology. Both GIS staff members from the City and County will be hosting information sessions at North Port High School on GIS Day.
