Two solar incentive programs are encouraging a transition toward renewable sources of energy in our community.
The City of Boulder Solar Grant Program provides financial assistance toward the installation of photovoltaic (PV) or solar thermal systems. Homes in the city’s affordable housing program, lower-income housing developed or owned by nonprofit organizations, and Boulder-based nonprofits are eligible to apply. More than $70,000 is available for the fall 2013 solar grant cycle.
Since the Solar Grant Program began in 2007, more than $360,000 has been awarded to nonprofit organizations and homeowners. Grant funds have contributed to the installation of over 700 kilowatts of solar power systems, saving grant recipients more than $90,000 annually in energy costs.
Another great solar offer is also available to Boulder County residents. Through Solar Benefits Colorado, residents who enroll in EnergySmart and Solar Benefits Colorado by Friday, Nov. 15, 2013, are eligible to receive a discount of 20 percent below market rate on materials and installation of solar power in their homes. A public informational session will be offered later this month for residents to learn more.
To date, more than 350 people from Boulder County and nearby jurisdictions have signed up to purchase solar energy for their homes at the best available rates in Colorado. If the Colorado participant pool installs solar in approximately 45 homes, each participant will receive an additional $500 incentive through Solar Benefits Colorado.
EnergySmart provides energy efficiency solutions to homes and businesses in all Boulder County communities. Solar Benefits Colorado is a solar discount program offered by ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability USA, which secures significant discounts and financing options for simple and affordable home solar installation.
