To commemorate the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity presented by the organization’s 100th anniversary, ICMA’s Executive Board is creating a 25-30-person, member-driven task force to engage other members in celebrating the accomplishments and legacy of ICMA’s first 100 years. The Task Force on ICMA's 100th Anniversary will also explore how ICMA can continue to serve as a cornerstone for our membership as we begin our second century. The board seeks broad membership representation with particular emphasis on appointing younger members who have been active in the organization in addition to current and past leaders who can serve as organization “historians.”
The task force will guide staff in the development and implementation of a series of anniversary-related strategies focused primarily on members and those in the profession. The task force will be asked to become generally knowledgeable about the history of ICMA, the council-manager form of government, and the local government management profession. Members will pay particular attention to the key historical milestones that should be highlighted for the membership. In addition, the task force will become familiar with the recent dialogue on leadership in the second hundred years and the implications for local government and the profession.
The task force will conduct its organizing meeting in March/April 2013 and will subsequently work in subgroups by conference call or e-mail to prepare recommendations for a meeting at the 2013 annual conference in Boston. Final recommendations will be presented to the board by November 2013. As with other ICMA task forces and committees, members are asked to commit their own time and pay their own airfare to participate. ICMA will cover lodging, food, and meeting expenses for the nonconference meeting.
Expressions of interest should be in writing and include a brief statement describing why you want to serve on the task force and what you could contribute. Also indicate if paying for airfare will cause a hardship for you to participate. Submissions are due January 15, 2013, by e-mail to Michele Frisby at mfrisby@icma.org.
