Town of South Berwick, ME

South Berwick, Maine (approx. 7,500 pop.), is seeking an innovative, experienced, proactive, community leader with strong financial skills, communication skills, mentoring ability, attention to detail and an economic development background to serve as its next Town Manager. Located in York County at the southern tip of Maine, South Berwick is situated along the Salmon Falls River, which separates Maine from New Hampshire. The Town boasts historic New England charm, but only an hour’s drive to the north or south can put you in Portland or Boston. South Berwick is easily accessible from US I-95 and NH Rt. 16.

South Berwick recently completed a community inclusive, six-month housing assessment planning process focusing on land use and growth in the community and which culminated with adopted updates to the town’s Comprehensive Plan. This project, in addition to a Downtown Revitalization Plan, and other adopted plans, ensures that South Berwick has firm guidance for thoughtfully planning for growth in a way that reflects local priorities, infrastructure capacity, and community character.

With a Town Council - Town Manager form of government under a local home rule charter, the Town Manager oversees an operating and capital budget of $12.9 million with 59 full-time and 23 part-time employees. There are eight (8) direct reports to the Town Manager with an additional six (6) direct reports to the Assistant Town Manager. There is one (1) union covering police officers. The successful candidate will be able to articulate a clear vision for continued economic growth in an evolving residential and commercial environment, while maintaining the Town’s rural character. Effective and transparent communication with the Town Council, municipal employees and the citizens of South Berwick is also essential.

A bachelor’s degree in a related field is required. A master’s degree and seven (7) years of relevant progressively responsible management experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of required knowledge, skills and ability will be considered.

Salary range to $175,000; starting salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. South Berwick is an equal opportunity employer.
