Public Works Director
City of Warrensburg, MO
We’re seeking a dynamic leader to provide strategic and operational direction for all divisions within the Public Works department. In this role, you’ll shape the City’s infrastructure and public facilities, ensuring efficient service delivery, regulatory compliance, and responsible use of public resources to maintain and enhance our built environment.
The Director will lead major capital projects, manage contractors, and drive successful projects that benefit the community, while upholding the City’s commitment to maintaining current infrastructure, while preparing for future growth. The ideal candidate is a collaborative problem-solver who applies public works best management practices and inspires teamwork.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage all divisions within the Public Works Department (Streets, Water Pollution Control, Buildings & Grounds, and Cemetery), ensuring effective operations, safety, and accountability.
- Develop and administer the department’s annual operating and capital budgets, including long-range infrastructure planning and equipment replacement schedules.
- Oversees maintenance and improvement of streets, stormwater infrastructure, wastewater systems, and public facilities
- Manage critical and complex programs, including snow removal operations.
- Identify opportunities for application of public works management best practices and collaborate with team for effective implementation.
- Ensure compliance with all state and federal environmental and safety regulations.
- Provide technical guidance and direction to staff, engineers, and contractors on public works projects.
Requirements:
A combination of relevant education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position will be considered. Some ways to meet qualifications could include a combination of the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, public administration, environmental science, business administration, or a closely related field.
- Six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in public works, utilities, or infrastructure management, including supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in a related field.
- Eight (8) or more years of management experience in public works or utilities.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license
