Director of Public Works

The Director of Public Works oversees the operation and maintenance of Road and Bridge, Shop, Right of Way, and Noxious Weed, in accordance with state statutes and generally accepted engineering practices. The Department is responsible for the construction and maintenance of highways, roads, bridges, culverts, signing and related activities as well as other functions, services, and activities that they may be authorized by law authorized by law per KSA 19-4501. This position is under the direct supervision of the County Administrator and/or his/her designee.

• Ability to demonstrate extensive problem-solving skills. Problems include handling employee and citizen concerns and complaints and the ability to troubleshoot problems and develop the most appropriate solution.
• Ability to complete complex mathematical computations.
• Ability to supervise employees.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other departments, subordinates, and shall relate to public in a positive manner.
• Knowledge of regulations, laws, statutes affecting operations of department.
• Knowledge of engineering principles.
• Knowledge of operation of sewer systems.
• Knowledge of project planning and budgeting practices.
• Knowledge of road construction and maintenance procedures and materials.
• Ability to operate computer, 10 key, copier and multi-line phone system, fax, and scanner.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Basic understanding of clerical procedures and systems such as recordkeeping and filing.
• Knowledge of word processing, databases, spreadsheets, software programs.
Required Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Public Administration, Construction Management, or a related field
• Five to seven years of experience in public works, engineering, infrastructure management, construction management project management experience
• Three to five years of supervisory or management experience overseeing staff, budgets, and large-scale projects.
Preferred Education and Experience
• Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Public Administration, Construction Management, or a related field
• Seven to ten years of experience in public works, engineering, infrastructure management, construction management project management experience
• Five to seven years of supervisory or management experience overseeing staff, budgets, and large-scale projects.
Certification, License, Registration
• Valid Kansas Driver’s License
Other Requirements
• Frequent travel
• Occasional hours outside of regular office time required
