ASSISTANT RECREATION DIRECTOR

The Cincinnati Recreation Commission is looking for an energetic and motivated Assistant Recreation Director to help lead our team in creating exceptional recreation experiences for our community. In this key leadership role, you’ll assist in directing the people and programs that keep our city active, healthy, and connected. You’ll collaborate with other departments, partner with outside organizations, and provide vital support to the Recreation Director—all while helping shape innovative programs and services that make a lasting impact.

Knowledge of:
Operations, services, and activities of a comprehensive recreation program.
Principles and practices of recreation programming and management.
Principles and practices of marketing and public relations.
Principles and practices of program development and administration.
Principles and practices of budget preparation and administration.
Principles and practices of management, motivation and human resource management.
Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations, including human resources practices and procedures.
Community organization principles; community and neighborhood dynamics.
Labor contracts; working with unions to resolve grievances and contract issues.
Park maintenance procedures and practices.
Skill to:
Operate appropriate computer equipment; use properly all related hardware and software.
Operate assigned vehicle in the course of duty.
Ability to:
Implement and maintain positive employee relations.
Promote and maintain highest integrity throughout all personnel.
Analyze and manage effective EEO/AA programs.
Manage and direct a comprehensive recreation program.
Develop and administer departmental goals, objectives and procedures.
Analyze and assess programs, policies and operational needs and make appropriate adjustments.
Identify and respond to sensitive community and organizational issues, concerns and needs.
Plan, organize, direct, and coordinate the work of lower-level staff
Delegate authority and responsibility.
Select, supervise, train, and evaluate staff.
Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals.
Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; speak in public to diverse groups.
Solicit financial sponsorships for Recreation events, programs, and facilities.
Required Education and Experience
Each applicant must have six years of responsible experience in recreation management or a closely related field, including two years of supervisory or administrative experience. Additionally, each applicant must have the equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in recreation administration, public administration, or a related field.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Must have a valid Driver's License.
Must be an excellent communicator and team builder.
May be required to obtain certification as a Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP); possession of this credential is desirable.
Working and Physical Conditions
Environmental Conditions: Indoor and outdoor environments; exposure to office computer screens; travel to City facilities and program sites required.
Physical Conditions: Duties require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing and walking for prolonged periods of time; must be able to operate assigned vehicle.

As our Assistant Recreation Director, you’ll wear many hats—and probably a whistle or two! You’ll help guide the big-picture vision while keeping the day-to-day running smoothly. From mentoring staff and shaping new programs, to visiting recreation sites and cheering on community events, your leadership will keep our city active and engaged. You’ll work side-by-side with the Recreation Director to set goals, manage budgets, and build partnerships with other departments, organizations, and community groups. Whether it’s problem-solving with a resident, securing new funding, or celebrating program successes, you’ll be a key player in making Cincinnati a place where recreation thrives!
