Public Information Officer

The Public Information Officer is responsible for developing, organizing and coordinating a comprehensive public information program and maximizing the production potential of the Municipal's Government Access Channels.

Highly responsible administrative work involved in the preparation and dissemination of various forms of information pertaining to Upper Darby Township and its operations, issues and policies. The incumbent must have considerable knowledge and familiarity with public information functions at all levels, including media relations, layout and production, photography, news writing and editing, video production, and public and community relations programming. Contact with the media, Municipal officials, community groups and the public are significant to the work. Work is performed with independent judgment and initiative under the general supervision of the Chief Administrator Officer.

The POI will:
• Formulate promotional and educational strategies to stimulate interest in Municipal activities/events; initiates programs and themes for special events; offers advice and guidance on the entire gamut of public information issues and strategies.
• Prepare recommendations for administrative policies pertaining to public information dissemination, response and objectives.
• Work closely with department heads to publicize items of public interest.
• Prepare news releases, articles, photo essays, newsletters, brochures, reports and scripts for audio-visual presentation that highlight Municipal operations, objectives, issues and accomplishments.
• Act as a liaison between the media and the Municipality.

Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or closely related field from an accredited college or university
• At least two (2) years of experience in the preparation of informational, educational and promotional materials.
• Valid and unexpired driver’s license
• Thorough knowledge of English usage, grammar, punctuation and spelling.

Preferred Education and Experience
• Experience as a representative of a governmental agency with major emphasis in the preparation of informational, educational and promotional materials.
• Bilingual in Spanish.
