Breaking into Local Government
Join a panel of ICMA members as they discuss their pathways into local government and provide helpful advice and guidance for others seeking to break into the public sector.

Since 2010, ICMA Student Chapters have prepared the next generation of managers for success in the public sector. The Student Chapters are now teaming up with the ICMA Learning Lab to co-create a new webinar series that focuses on important topics relevant to students.

In this three-part series, you’ll join a host of ICMA members and subject matter experts as they discuss some of the top issues on the minds of our chapter members.

Session 1: Breaking Into Local Government is based on ICMA’s new guidebook Breaking Into Local Government: A Guidebook for Career Transitions and will offer advice for students and professionals from other sectors looking to begin or transition to a career in local government. Topics will include:

  • An overview of common pathways into local government
  • Where to seek coaching and mentorship
  • How to build and sustain a professional network
  • Where to pursue certifications and training

Presenters will also respond to pre-selected questions from current student chapter members before opening the floor for questions from the audience.

Presenters:

  • Brandon Ford, Assistant Township Manager, Township of Lower Merion, PA; ICMA Executive Board Vice President, Northeast Region
  • Erika Cooper-Bateman, Director of Community Services, City of Aledo, TX
  • Michael Silliman, Village Manager, Village of Martin's Additions, MD
