The city of Raleigh defines sustainability as a broad term that addresses three fundamental principles: economic strength, environmental stewardship, and social equity, and a sustainable community as a thriving community that provides opportunity for all residents, cares for the environment, and has a long-term vision for a prosperous future. Sustainable Raleigh and related initiatives provide guidance for policy development and goal setting for the City of Raleigh based on achieving economic strength, environmental stewardship, and social equity. In order to achieve these goals and make the initiatives successful, the city is working in partnership with the local business community, universities, and civic and non-profit organizations. This document provides an overview of the city of Raleigh’s framework for sustainability and both city-wide and department specific sustainability initiatives.  For more information on Raleigh's sustainability work, visit their website
