Last summer, youngsters in the city of Cortland, New York (19,000), had the opportunity to participate in Cortland Skate Park’s Skateboard Camp. The camp was run by two 16-year-old members of the youth skateboard committee, which oversees the park, raises money for new equipment, and develops programming ideas. The two camp leaders donated their time to the camp, which ran from 10 a.m. to noon for one week in August. The 12 participants (11 boys and 1 girl!) ranged in age from 8 to 14. During the camp sessions, the children learned about skateboard safety and skate park etiquette, as well as how to do basic skateboard tricks, including ollie and grind. Of the $30 fee for the camp, $10 went for a camp T-shirt (the design was chosen through a contest run by the Cortland Youth Bureau) and the remainder went to the skate park trust to purchase new equipment. The insurance firm used by the city required a waiver for each participant.
