The Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve, a “critical estuary”, located in Orange County, CA was suffering due to years of grazing, grading, salt works, mining, and other activities. The OC Parks and Recreation Department established the Second Sundays Habitat Restoration Program to help preserve this important natural landscape. On the second Sunday of every month more than 100 volunteers gather for three hours to work on the preserve by removing non-native plants, planting native plants, picking up trash and maintaining trails.
