SKILL-BUILDING WORKSHOP

Cutting through the Noise: Community Engagement in a Hybrid World

April 12, 2024
09:00 AM to 11:00 AM

Nearly four years after a sudden shift to a virtual engagement world, local governments are now trying to adapt to a hybrid world when it comes to making meaningful community connections. These connections are imperative for providing guidance, input, and feedback. But what is the best way to engage when some community members are in their local neighborhood association meeting, some are on social media, some are willing to use a QR code to fill out a survey, and some want to come to a special meeting and talk to someone? Not only are government officials dealing with various personal preferences, but there are other important considerations including how do we overcome the digital divide and how do we make surveys and meetings accessible and inclusive?

The City of San Antonio faces these questions when engaging the community on many issues including public art projects, funding opportunities, and programming. Department leaders will show recent examples of meeting the community where they are already gathered – whether in person or online - to build an open, personal, two-way relationship with residents and visitors while meeting quantitative engagement measures.

Learning Objectives:

  • List ways to engage community where they are already gathered.
  • Adapt processes to respond to changing communication methods and best practices.
  • Engage your communities in the way they want to be reached.
