Happy Wednesday!

There’s only a few days of summer left. The kids are going back to school. The “young adults” are returning to their college towns. Teachers are getting back to their classrooms. While the rest of us are trying to squeeze some fresh air in between our 9 to 5 jobs.

But don’t worry; I’m here to save the day once again. Local governments have been trying to develop programs that get their citizens involved in outdoor activities that promote healthy lifestyles. Farmers markets seem to be the summertime answer.

 Farmers markets serve several purposes:

  1. They promote healthy foods and green farming techniques.
  2. They promote tourism and stimulate economies.
  3. They encourage people to shop outdoors and get some fresh air, which promotes a healthier community.

The Knowledge Network has several great resources to help jumpstart your efforts:

  • Williamsburg, Virginia, has taken a unique approach to farmers markets. They are now participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. This allows low-income households to purchase healthy, fresh foods produced right in their communities.
  • Citizens love having farmers markets. Take a look at how the city of High Springs rallied together and started planting community gardens in vacant city lots.
  • Another unique idea is organizing a “Cash Mob” to stimulate the local economy, support local business, and encourage local farmers. Check out this blog (and be sure to watch the video); you don’t want to miss out.
  • This PM article highlights ways to bring the locavore movement to a location near you.

As Mama Himes always told me, “Go outside and blow the stink off ya.” I’ll be here, behind this keyboard waiting for your comments, questions, and funny stories.
