Discussion of EU Approaches to Waste Management

On April 16, 2015, WMTR, in close cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia (the Ministry), held a discussion on Waste management approaches in EU countries. The discussion took place in Telavi Municipality and brought together representatives of the Ministry and of all municipalities of the Kakheti region, NGOs, and school students.

Mr. Alverd Chankseliani, the Ministry representative, opened the meeting by sharing information on the  recent developments in the area of solid waste management and future plans of the Ministry for its continued improvement. 

Over the course of the discussion, WMTR team delivered a detailed presentation on waste management approaches in EU countries, during which the following issues were discussed:

  •  EU waste policy development history
  • Waste management methods
  • Basic statistical indicators
  • Waste management policy tools
  • Waste collection systems
  • Separation methods
  • Cost recovery
  • Case study: Waste Management Practices in Germany

Attendees actively participated in the discussion, showing a particular interest in  waste tariffs, collection systems, and waste separation methods.

The Waste Management Technologies in Regions (WMTR) initiative is supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by International City/County Management Association (ICMA) together with its local partner Caucasus Environmental NGO Network (CENN).

WMTR supports local government authorities on the central and municipal level, local businesses and communities, with a goal of designing an effective integrated waste management system in the Kakheti and Adjara regions.
