Earlier this year, the City of Piqua was recognized as a Playful City USA Community. This designation signifies that the City of Piqua values it’s parks and encourages residents to get out a play and utilize the park system to be active. For the past two years, the city has sponsored a Piqua Play Day at Fountain Park as part of this certification process.

One of the benefits of earning the designation as a Playful City USA Community, besides the recognition and marketing of the Piqua Park System, is that the city becomes eligible to receive grants for playgrounds or play structures from KaBoom and its affiliates.

Today, the City of Piqua was notified of the award of a $20,000 grant to build a completely handicap playground scheduled for Pitsenbarger Park. Handicap playgrounds provide play structures that are designed for children with disabilities to provide them with the same recreation opportunities as other play structures. For example, children confined to wheelchairs can enjoying swinging in equipment designed to accommodate a wheelchair. This handicap designed and accessible play structure assures that all children of Piqua can utilize play structures and equipment without limitations.

This playground may be one of the first in the Dayton Region and we are very appreciative of KaBoom and its affiliates for recognizing this need and providing the funding to make such a facility a reality.
