The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has been authorized to award $473.8 million in Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Discretionary Grants on a competitive basis for projects that will have a significant impact on the nation, a metropolitan area, or a region. The grant program “supports projects across the U.S. that improve mobility for people and freight.”

The TIGER Discretionary Grants appropriation is similar to the TIGER grant program that was authorized as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and provides DOT with the unique opportunity “to invest in road, rail, transit and port projects that promise to achieve critical national objectives.”

Unlike previous TIGER grant programs, no pre-application is required for this round of TIGER Discretionary Grants. The Grants.gov “Apply” function, which allows applicants to submit final applications, opened on April 29, 2013; final applications must be submitted by June 3, 2013, at 5:00 p.m. EDT.
