On November 19, at 10AM, the USAID supported program Waste Management Technologies in Regions (WMTR) celebrated World Sanitation Day.

In 2013, the United Nations General Assembly designated 19 November as World Sanitation Day, also known as World Toilet Day. This day is celebrated in the green calendar to raise awareness for the use of toilets, sanitation, and clean water. Every day, 4,000 children across the world die due to diarrhoea caused by poor sanitation and dirty water.

The WMTR program celebrated World Sanitation Day for the first time in Georgia by hosting an eco-camp in Bulachauri Green Centre for the winners of a school film competition that took place in October. During the competition, students from 33 schools in Adjara and Kakheti were asked to create 2-minute films about waste related issues in their villages. Fifteen films from 30 students were selected as winners. Competition winners were then invited to participate in the eco-camp on November 18th and 19th. There, they received training in global and local sanitation challenges.

At the conclusion of the eco-camp, students presented their work and shared their experiences at a special ceremony. Winners were awarded with backpacks and all 33 participating schools were given recycling bins. The Deputy Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Protection, Maia Bitadze, also participated in the ceremony.

The Waste Management Technologies in Regions program was officially launched in March 2014 and is supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) together with CENN – the sub recipient of the initiative.

The program supports the competent central and local government authorities, local businesses and communities, and municipalities in the design of an integrated waste management system for the Kakheti and Adjara regions.

The program assists the Government of Georgia in designing adequate waste management systems in the targeted regions. This will be done by implementing pilot interventions in selected municipalities to support a cleaner and healthier environment, minimizing adverse impacts from waste on human health and natural resources, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from landfills.
