Oakdale, Minnesota

Successful local economic development requires long-term, strategic planning. How did Oakdale’s economy remain strong, even during the economic downturn? City Administrator Craig Waldron’s focus on and expertise in economic development made the difference.

In his role as city administrator, Waldron provided strategic direction and helped city staff and elected officials transform policies and plans into realities.

Economic development had been Oakdale’s top priority for years, as mandated by the city council. Working on behalf of the council, Waldron developed a plan that focused on creating business parks, repurposing existing buildings, and attracting large businesses to the community.

As a result of his efforts, numerous business parks sprung up in the city over the past years. He spearheaded successful redevelopment projects, using existing building and sites for new business initiatives. Waldron also was instrumental in helping attract Imation Corporation, which chose Oakdale as its world headquarters.

In 2012, Waldron was awarded the President’s Award from the Economic Development Association of Minnesota for his work in Oakdale.
